Curtains or blinds, and the pelmet decision that precedes both

A curtain hung from a rod fixed to the wall above the window reads as an addition to the room. The same curtain running from a recessed pelmet at ceiling level reads as part of the architecture, and the difference costs almost nothing if it is decided before the false ceiling goes up.

Curtains give softness, absorb sound and handle large openings better. Blinds give control over light in fine increments and take up almost no depth, which matters in narrow rooms. In practice many Indian homes want both — a sheer or blind for the day and a blackout layer for sleeping.

For bedrooms, blackout matters more than people expect and is defeated by light leaking at the sides. A track that returns to the wall, or a pelmet with a generous overlap, solves what a heavier fabric cannot.

Measure for fullness. A curtain that is twice the track width hangs in proper folds; one at 1.5 times looks stretched, and no fabric quality compensates for it.
