Designing a pooja space in an apartment

A niche done properly reads better than a room done as an afterthought.

Designing a pooja space in an apartment

Very few flats have a spare room for this, and the attempts that fail are usually the ones that treat a corner of the living room as a temporary arrangement that then becomes permanent. Decide the location, then build it in.

The practical constraints are real regardless of how observant the household is. You need ventilation for a lamp or agarbatti, a surface that tolerates oil and ash, a light that works when the room lights are off, and a position that is not directly under a staircase or against a bathroom wall.

A niche between 600 and 900 mm wide with a stone or Corian base, a low-level warm light and a shutter that closes is enough for most apartments, and it disappears when shut. Wood directly above a lamp is the most common detailing mistake — leave clearance or line it in stone.

Keep the storage below rather than beside. Everything a pooja space accumulates is small, and a drawer keeps it from spreading across the surface.
