Stone that survives an Indian summer

Thermal movement, sealing cycles, and the west façade problem.

Stone that survives an Indian summer

Stone behaves differently on a sample board than on a wall that reaches 55°C by three in the afternoon. Thermal movement is the part most specifications ignore, and it is the part that cracks a joint eighteen months in.

Darker stones absorb more and move more. On a west or south-west elevation that matters enough to change the fixing detail — mechanical anchors rather than adhesive alone, and joints sized for movement rather than for looks.

Sealing is a maintenance commitment, not a one-time treatment. A penetrating sealer on a kitchen counter is good for perhaps two years in daily use. If nobody is going to reapply it, specify a stone that tolerates being neglected instead of one that punishes it.

Ask the supplier for the water absorption figure and the flexural strength. If they cannot produce either, you are buying on appearance alone.

If nobody will reapply the sealer, specify a stone that tolerates neglect.
