Storage in a small bedroom, without making it smaller

The volume you are not using is above the wardrobe and under the bed.

Storage in a small bedroom, without making it smaller

A 10x11 ft bedroom with a queen bed has very little floor left, and almost every attempt to add storage takes more of it. The two places that cost nothing in floor area are the loft above the wardrobe and the box under the bed.

Take the wardrobe to the ceiling. A 7-foot wardrobe in a 10-foot room wastes a metre of full-width, full-depth volume and collects dust on top of it instead. Loft shutters are cheap; the space behind them holds every seasonal and once-a-year item in the house.

Hydraulic bed storage is worth the mechanism cost if it is used for bedding and luggage rather than as an inaccessible archive. Drawer-type storage is more useful day to day but holds less. Choose by what actually goes in.

Then stop adding. A study table, a dresser and a chair in an 11-foot room is a room you edge around. Wall-mounted alternatives — a floating desk, a mirror with a narrow ledge — do the same job without occupying the floor you walk on.

A seven-foot wardrobe in a ten-foot room wastes a metre of full-width volume.
