Layered light, and why one ceiling fixture never works

Ambient, task and accent do different jobs. One fitting cannot do all three.

Layered light, and why one ceiling fixture never works

A single central fixture lights a room evenly and flatteringly to nobody. It flattens texture, throws shadows onto work surfaces, and gives you exactly one mood at exactly one brightness.

Layering means three circuits doing separate work. Ambient fills the volume. Task puts light where hands are — under a wall unit, beside a chair, over a mirror at face height rather than overhead. Accent picks out what you want noticed, and does most of the work in how a room photographs and feels at night.

The decisions are wiring decisions, which means they happen before plaster or not at all. Dimming in particular: retrofitting a dimmable circuit is a chase in a finished wall.

Colour temperature is worth settling early too. Mixing 3000K and 4000K in one sightline reads as a fault even to people who cannot name what is wrong.
